Listed as a "Major Shrine" in the Engishiki of the Heian period, its founding predates the Jingo-Keion era (770). It is said that in the third year of the Jōryaku era (1079), during Emperor Shirakawa's imperial visit, the shrine received an imperial edict bestowing the name "Funai Daiichi Makigami Shrine."
