The pristine natural forest of Ashiu, located northeast of Miyama Town at the headwaters of the Miyama River flowing east to west, is the source of Miyama's abundant waterways and culture.
It is a remarkably rare forest for a low mountain range near a major city, rich in plant, animal, and insect ecosystems.
It is currently managed as the Kyoto University Ashiu Research Forest.
