About Miyama

This region retains the authentic scenery of old Japan. Designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, "Kaya-buki no Sato" features 39 thatched-roof houses lining the streets, creating beautiful scenery throughout the seasons. Located at the headwaters of the clear Yura River, it is a place where rich nature and traditional ways of life thrive.

Ashio Forest

The source of the Miyama River, which flows east to west through Miyama Town, lies in the untouched natural forest of Ashiu, located in the northeast of Miyama Town. This forest is the source of Miyama's abundant waterways and culture.
It is a forest rich in plant, animal, and insect life, making it exceptionally rare for a low mountain range near a major city.
It is currently managed as the Kyoto University Ashiu Research Forest.

Miyama River Sweetfish

Sweetfish are one of Miyama's most important representative ingredients, having won the runner-up prize multiple times at the National Sweetfish Tasting Competition. They feed on algae, so they inhabit areas with excellent water quality like the Yura River. Fishing permits are sold at the Miyama Fisheries Cooperative Office. During the summer, sweetfish catching events are also held within the town.
